Staff Spotlight: 20 Questions in 2 Minutes with Jackie Schultz

20 Questions in 2 Minutes is our series of interviews with Management Council staff members. This week’s guest is Jackie Schultz, Senior Technical Support.

  1. When making a PB&J sandwich, do you put the peanut butter or jelly on first?

I don’t usually eat PB&J, but if I remember from making them for my kids, I think I put the peanut butter on first. On the other hand, if I’m making peanut butter and honey on toast, the honey definitely goes on first, then the peanut butter covers it so the honey doesn’t drip all over.

  1. Do you hit the snooze button or wake up immediately?

My alarm goes off at 5am, and I either wake up at 4:50am and bounce out of bed or, like today, I snooze that thing every ten minutes until 6am and drag myself out of bed.

  1. What’s your favorite board game?

A couple that I really enjoy are Sushi Go party edition and Carcassonne.

  1. What activity instantly calms you?

Taking a deep breath or reading, particularly the Psalms. Recently, I have also found that going for a walk and listening to music is also very calming.

  1. What’s your favorite volunteer or service project?

I am a lay pastor, so I love anything and everything to do with that; meeting with families, individuals, or aiding people in our community—I love it all. My other passion is Living Water Mission. It is a local charity where 100% of the proceeds go to digging water wells for communities in Africa.

  1. What is the last book you’ve read?

The last fun book I read was The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. A more thought-provoking book that I’m reading right now is Entering the Passion of Jesus. It’s really interesting because it is written by Amy-Jill Lavine, a professor of Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University, who teaches the Passion from the perspective of someone growing up in the Jewish faith.

  1. What can always bring your family together?

Food and games! We love playing games, and if you can wrap that up with food, it’s the best of the best.

  1. What’s the best piece of advice a family member has given you?

My grandmother was a fun-loving person. She always encouraged me to enjoy the moment and don’t take life too seriously because “you want happy wrinkles when you are older.”

  1. How would your friends describe you?

Kind and compassionate.

  1. Who inspires you to paint?

My daughter inspired me to start painting as a way to process some things happening in my life. One day, she said “let’s just get out the paints, canvas, and brushes and just paint.” So, we did.

  1. What was the last experience that made you a stronger person?

Definitely my divorce. I had to learn how to survive on my own. I went from living with my parents on a Friday, married the next day, and moved to a new country on Monday. So, when we divorced, I had never lived on my own, and it was a huge learning curve. Sometimes I just stop and look at something I created or fixed and say, “I did that,” and I smile.

  1. What you most like to tell yourself at age 13?

I think it would probably be, “don’t sweat the small stuff and enjoy the journey.”

  1. What’s the least favorite job you’ve ever had?

The job I liked the least was working at McDonalds. I would come home all sticky and greasy. Customer service in a restaurant can be a challenge, but it taught me a lot and it was a good place to start. It certainly helped me appreciate where I am now.

  1. What originally got you interested in the work you currently do?

I worked as an accountant for an organization that was undergoing some serious downsizing. I saw the writing on the wall, so I started looking for a job and found one with a school district. They were looking for someone with accounting experience, and a little bit of technology knowledge. I had to give a presentation before they hired me, and that presentation (and my accounting experience) landed me the job! All the knowledge I’ve gained since then has been 100% on the job.

  1. When you started at the Management Council, what most surprised you?

It was the support of the people here. They trust and respect you. As a result, you strive to do a good job as a person, as a colleague, and as a professional. The positivity and encouragement are just so refreshing.

  1. What three traits define you?

Compassionate, calm in a crisis, and a quirky sense of humor (anybody a fan of The Red Green Show?).

  1. What is your personal philosophy?

My purpose on this journey called life is to serve the Lord. Everything in my life flows out from that statement. Whether I am working at my job, my home, or in my community, loving and serving are the essence of who I am.

  1. Describe a win from the work you’ve done.

I have created training videos that can be used by the ITCs or the local districts. These videos have also been uploaded to PowerSchool’s Community Portal where they can be accessed by member districts worldwide.

  1. How do you define success?

I would say that success is doing your very best with whatever project you’re working on, and even if it doesn’t turn out perfect according to your expectations, the fact that you gave it your all is what matters.

  1. What is your favorite thing about working at the Management Council?

I love helping people! My happy place is when I can help someone solve a problem… and the people… I love the people I work with.
